Why use WebSphere on Amazon Web Services?

The power of WebSphere, with the speed of AWS

Administrator

This is a question we get asked a lot. Why would you want to use WebSphere on AWS? Why not just download and use on your local Linux box? Well there are a number of answers.

Firstly, there’s licensing. If you want to download and run WebSphere, you’ll need to buy a license from IBM. With DevTestCloud WebSphere instances on AWS, the licensing is included in the cost, so you don’t need to buy a separate license, and you only pay for what you use. When the instance is shut down, you’re not paying for it.

Next, there’s convenience. You don’t need to navigate the IBM website to find the version you want, download and install using one of a number of processes and after reading lots of technical documentation. You don’t need to run the updateInstaller to update to the version you want. In the case of network deployment, you can very quickly set up a Deployment Manager and as many node agents as you want, and create a federated cell without getting into the technical detail. Simple scripts do all the work for you.

Finally, speed. You can go from nothing to running your applications in WebSphere in as little as a few minutes. In under half an hour you could be running your application in a WebSphere application server Network Deployment cluster with several nodes and a Deployment Manager instance. And once you're done, shut it down to use again later, or delete it altogether.

So whether you need to run a WebSphere instance or cluster to test a new application you’re trialling, to run some performance tests in a particular configuration, or you just want to learn about WebSphere, using DevTestCloud is a great way to get up to speed quickly!
